UK IT company makes £4.3m Bitcoin purchase

The Smarter Web Company, a UK-based based technology firm, has announced a significant investment in Bitcoin as part of a wider 10-year treasury strategy.

The company, which provides a variety of IT services and is listed on the London Stock Exchange, confirmed it had purchased 50 Bitcoin for a value of £4.3m.

The Smarter Web Company offers web design, web development and online marketing services, with its clients paying an initial fee, an annual hosting charge and an optional monthly marketing charge.

Since 2023, the company has adopted a policy of accepting payment in Bitcoin. The Smarter Web Company has previously stated it believes that Bitcoin forms a “core part of the future of the global financial system”.

To date, the group’s holdings in the cryptocurrency now stand at 2,100 Bitcoin, having purchased this amount for a value of £171.1m. The company also reported that its approximate net cash in treasury currently available to be deployed into Bitcoin stands at £19.5m.

In a statement, The Smarter Web Company said: “As the company explores opportunities through organic growth and corporate acquisitions, [it] is pioneering the adoption of a Bitcoin treasury policy into its strategy.”
