BT has agreed a deal to sell its Italian business to telecoms company Retelit as it looks to refocus the group's efforts in the UK.
While BT did not disclose the value of sale, it did report that BT Italia generated revenues of €160M in Italy in 2024.
BT has been withdrawing its operations from Italy since taking a £530m writedown relating to an accounting scandal at BT Italia in 2017.
In January this year, BT’s chief executive, Allison Kirkby, said that BT was on track to deliver its target cash flow inflection to circa £2bn in 2027, and £3bn by the end of the decade.
Italy’s Retelit said its agreement to acquire BT Italia would significantly enhance its fibre-optic network by an additional 11,500 km.
“This expansion will further strengthen Retelit’s coverage of the Italian corporate market, providing a more comprehensive suite of ICT infrastructure and services to support the innovation and the digital transformation of Italian enterprises,” the group added.
The agreement remains subject to approval by the relevant authorities.
